2020 Schlarship Recipient - Sufana Noorwez
A message from Anne Stacy...............
It is a true pleasure to introduce to you our 2020 WCWGA Scholarship winner, Sufana Noorwez. This talented young lady graduated this year from Shrewsbury High School and will attend Vassar College in the fall.
Shrewsbury does not field a girl’s golf team so Sufana earned a starting spot on the boy’s varsity team her entire high school career. In addition to serving as a co-captain for the boy’s varsity squad, she also was named the team’s MVP in the fall of 2019. Her team earned either first or second place honors in the Midland-Wachusett League for 2017 and 2019 (which qualified the team for division 1 state championship play.) Individually she was named the Worcester T&G Girls Golf Player of the Year in 2017 and earned a spot on their All-Star golf team for 2018 and 2019.
Impressive as her golf statistics are, her academic and volunteer credentials shine as well. Sufana was a member of the National Honor Society and those in English, French and Social Sciences as well. Fluent in three languages (English, Hindi and Urdu), this talented young lady also wrote a novella, “6 Days” for the 2020 Senior Capstone Exhibition. Her science experiment on “The Effects of Temperature on Mealworm Metabolism of Plastics” earned her awards at the High School, Regional and State Science and Engineering fairs.
Sufana’s volunteer work within the Shrewsbury Public Library spans eight years (very rare for volunteer work) beginning in 2013. Once she commits to something she cares about, she puts all her time and effort into it.
Please rest assured that the WCWGA scholarship money will be put to good use. I want to thank Christine Coughlin and Ann Zeleski for taking the time with our “round table “ discussion on choosing a winner this year. I must say that we have never had such a skilled, talented and intelligent group of young ladies from which to choose.
